UFO 2018 Finish Along
For those who were not able to be at the February and want to register their UFOs for our Finish Along, please bring them to the March meeting. UFOs must be at least partially started for this event. As you finish your UFOs throughout the year, you will turn in your ticket(s) and be entered in the fun end-of-year prize drawing.

Pittsburgh Creative Arts Festival Volunteers
We’re still looking for volunteers to support our Guild while hanging out at a fun creative arts festival! We are looking for volunteers to man a table during the three days of the festival to help us raffle our quilt, show off our minis, and do a hexie pin activity on Saturday. Here are hours we need to cover:
Friday, April 6, 2018 – 12:00 Noon to 7:00 PM
Saturday, April 7, 2018 – 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Sunday, April 8, 2018 – 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM

Please mark your availability here or email Michele (pittsburghmqg@gmail.com). We’ll then make a volunteer schedule with 2 hour shifts. (Volunteers will not need to pay an admission fee.)

Modern Solids Challenge Minis
There’s still space if you want to have your Modern Solids Challenge Minis (the ones we made in the guild logo colors and displayed together at the Mancuso Exhibit) displayed at Threadbare Maple Festival on March 10^th and the Pittsburgh Creative Arts Festival. Email Michele (pittsburghmqg@gmail.com) to volunteer your minis will be included and you must be able to bring your mini to the March meeting to be included.

July Meeting Recap

We met in July to discuss several methods to hand applique as led by the always informative, Barbara Cain. After the presentation, which can be found here, we split into small groups and moved around the room to try out the different methods outlined.

It's time to pay your annual dues! Please head over to the membership info page on this blog for details on how to pay. Payment is due by August 1st.
We saw the last of our Inspiration Challenge blocks this month. Bring your completed quilt using your blocks to the September meeting for a chance to win a basket full of great prizes!
We will be kicking off a new challenge and swap all in one next month. To participate, bring to the August meeting a sandwich bag full of scraps that you would like a fellow guild member to make you a mini from. Check out all the details of the Make Me a Mini challenge on the Guild Challenges and Swaps tab of this blog.
Don't forget to register for the members only Shibori workshop at Workshop PGH on 07/29. You can find the registration link on Workshop PGH's website. The cost is $38 for a 3.5 hour workshop. You can bring your own fabric or purchase napkins on site to dye.
The next meeting is Sunday August 6th at the Stephen Foster Community Center, 286 Main St, Pittsburgh, PA 15201 from 1:00-4:00 pm (please note that this is a different location than in the past). Look for more details about this meeting to be on the blog soon!

The next free monthly sew day is at Quilter's Depot, 4160 Library Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15234, on Saturday August 19th. We will be sending out an eVite for this event in a few weeks.

May 2017 Meeting Recap

This month we combined our monthly meeting with an all day sewing retreat.

At our meeting we recognized the members of our guild who had quilts in the Three Rivers Quilt Show and those that won ribbons. They can be found here.

Entries for the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza (PNQE) show in Philadelphia must be sent in by June 3, 2017. Details here.

All guild members are encouraged to participate in the Modern Solids Challenge. We are to make a 24" square mini quilt using all solids in the colors of our logo. These minis will hang in the PNQE show as a display together. Please bring your completed mini to the June meeting! You can find progress photos on Instagram at #pghmqgmsc and what I'm seeing so far is impressive! (Check out our new page on this website to read up on all current and past guild challenges going on!)

The Modern Quilt Guild has announced the next Charity Quilt Challenge guidelines. The theme is modern-traditionalism. Brainstorm some ideas for our next quilt and submit your ideas via e-mail to the guild. We'll decide on an idea at our June meeting.

Our next meeting will be Sunday June 4 from 1-4pm at The Pittsburgh Project. Amanda will be speaking about how modern quilters use social media to connect, find inspiration, and share their work.

June Meeting Recap

Before we review the events from the June meeting, registration details for the members only Shibori dyeing workshop have been emailed out! The workshop will be led by Rebekah Joy at Workshop PGH on July 29th. This should be a fun event so make sure you get yourself all signed up!

We had a great turn out at the June meeting. Everyone was pretty excited to turn in their Modern Solids Minis for the upcoming PghMQG exhibit at the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza in September. Check out #pghmqgmsc on Instagram to see all of the great pieces created for this challenge! If you haven't turned in your mini for this challenge yet, please be sure to bring it to the July meeting.

Our presentation in June was led by Amanda and covered how to use social media to find information, connect with other quilters, and find inspiration. You can download the presentation slides here. We reviewed some tips on using Instagram and finding info on the MQG website and on the PghMQG website. We have two new tabs on our website with good information: the membership information tab and the guild challenges/swaps tab. Be sure to check them out!

We also decided on our plan for the 2018 QuiltCon challenge quilt. The project this year will be led by our VP of Membership, Michele. Several members volunteered to be on the project committee. Look for more details to coming soon!

June 2017 Meeting- Social Media and Modern Quilting

Join us June 4, 2017 from 1-4pm at The Pittsburgh Project for our monthly meeting!

Bring your Modern Solids Challenge mini with you! They are due at the meeting. Don't forget to put a four inch sleeve on the back for hanging and a label.

As always, bring your Inspiration Challenge blocks and your Show and Tell items to share.

Amanda will be speaking about Social Media and Modern Quilting. She'll discuss how you can use social media to connect, share our work, and find inspiration.

Madrona Road Fabric Challenge - Lauren

Is everybody ready to see the Pittsburgh Modern Quilt Guild's Madrona Road Fabric Challenge projects? First up is Lauren's lovely quilt!

Lauren's Madrona Road Challenge Quilt

I was really thrilled to get the opportunity to participate in the MQG Madrona Road Challenge. I'm new to quilting but was really inspired (and jealous) of the last challenge using Jay McCarroll's Habitat line last year. Originally, I had planned to make an elaborate zigzag quilt inspired by this rug in my Crate and Barrel catalog. So I started cutting, having no real idea on how to make it work, and made a couple zigzag elements. Unfortunately, my plan pretty much failed miserably and I had to start again from scratch.

In my original plan, I wanted to use a lot of coordinating solids and solid-like fabrics for additional texture. So for plan B, I decided to just start cutting all of my fabrics into random width strips. I pieced all these strips into slabs roughly 13"x 22." I pulled out my trusty 12.5" square ruler and cut wonky squares from each of the slabs (realizing at this moment that I just wasted a ton of fabric). For the front, I started laying my squares out alternating directions (you can see my initial plan on our Flickr page). When I looked at it all laid out I thought it read somewhat flat and boring. I pulled out my stash of solids and started seeing what each solid would do. I posted this photo to flickr as well for advice.

After several days and great feedback from my flickr peeps, I decided to change up my setting using some diagonals and alternative sashing techniques. I also added in one plain block to give the eye a little bit of a break. I think the final project looks interesting and dynamic and I'm super happy with it.
For the back, my goal was to use up some of my wasted scraps from the front. I started with the big pieces left over from the fabric I received in the challenge and then overlaid with some of my left over pieces from the front. I tried to add some additional interest and contrast by using different values and some additional pops of color. Piecing this puppy was a little bit of a challenge, but I decided to tackle it in sections adding white and trimming the entire time. In the end, it turned out just as I had hoped.

I always have a tough time deciding on quilting. I generally like all-over designs that add a lot of texture. In the end I decided on this design from Oh, Fransson! From the beginning I planned to use the memoir text print for my border but didn't have quite enough - I used some of the bright colors to bring the length up to size. Finished size is 36" square and I love it to bits!

PghMQG Exhibit at PNQE!

The Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza (PNQE) quilt show coming up this September will feature an exhibit of work by the members our guild! Details about the show in general can be found by following this link.

Entries are now open for members to submit their work to be shown at this event!

Some additional important details:

Each member may submit up to three works of any size for the exhibit (if you are making a mini for the Modern Solids Challenge, it does not count as one of the three you may submit)
Quilts will be selected by PghMQG leadership based on the number of submissions we receive
Please submit a separate form for each work you are submitting along with two photos of each quilt (one photo of the entire piece and one detail close-up photo), the link to the form is below
Shipping to and from the show will be at no cost to you
We would like you to submit your most modern pieces, but most importantly we would love to see work from every member represented regardless of how modern it is!
Feel free to submit unfinished pieces. They must be finished by Aug 13th and of good quality in order to be included in the exhibit.
Entries are due by Friday, June 2nd

April 2017 Meeting: Quilt Judging

This month we'll be at The Pittsburgh Project on Sunday April 2nd from 1-4pm.

Ooooo, pretty fabric!

We have a lot of exciting things to talk about this month, including our new Modern Solids Challenge. Look at these beautiful fabric bundles all ready to go for the challenge! FQ bundles will be available at the meeting for $10. Please bring cash or check if you are interested in purchasing a bundle.

Our program this month will be presented by Stacy about quilt judging. She will discuss:

Difference between jury, judge and exhibit.
The context for judging/what it's for.
What the judge's role is and isn't.
Where judging criteria come from

She has prepared an outline which can be viewed here. Please print this if you would like a copy for the meeting! She will also show examples from her own quilts.

The Draft of Guild Bylaws and Sew Much More

We have a draft of the Pittsburgh Modern Quilt Guild Bylaws

As announced last week we will have our next meeting on Sunday, July 8 at the Pittsburgh Project from 1:00-4:00 PM. Gina and I have been working with Lori, Michelle, and Lauren, who volunteered to help after the first meeting in May. Together we have drafted a set of bylaws. Gina and I are incredibly thankful for their help!

The draft of the bylaws is now available for your review on the Guild Meeting Notes page. Please review this draft before our next meeting. We will be discussing the draft, making suggested changes, and voting on the final draft.

Guild Leadership Elections

Once we have successfully approved and voted on the bylaws we will move on to electing Guild leadership.

We need to fill the following positions:

President

Vice President

Treasurer/Membership Coordinator

Secretary

Social Media Coordinator

A description of each of these positions is provided in the draft of the bylaws. If you are interested in nominating yourself for one of these leadership positions please send an email informing us of your self-nomination, the position, and provide a brief paragraph about yourself. This paragraph is a way for us to get to know you better and will only be shared privately via the Guild mailing list.

Please submit your nomination no later than Saturday, June 30, 2012. Once we have gathered all of the nominees we will forward the list for you to review before the meeting on July 8.

QuiltCon Block Challenge

Our first sewing activity, which will take place after we conduct general business on Sunday, July 8, will be the block challenge from the QuiltCon coordinators. This is a fun way for us to get to know one another and participate as a guild celebrating modern quilting. The theme is “What does modern quilting mean to you?”

More information can be found here: QuiltCon Challenge. There are links to a few online fabric shops that have created fabric bundles, which fit within the challenge’s guidelines. However, you may have fabrics in your stash that fit these guidelines, and there are plenty of local fabric stores that carry these solids and a variety of matching prints.

Please plan on bringing any supplies you may need to create your quilt block(s)- this includes your sewing machine. The Project has tables, chairs, and electrical outlets, but you may also want to bring an extension cord.

PghMQG Charity Quilts!

At our September meeting, we discussed our upcoming charity quilt opportunities and finalized our vision for the quilts. We are really excited to complete these projects together!

Pittsburgh Project Donation

We have decided that since the quilt for the Pittsburgh Project has to be completed for their fundraiser in early December, we should focus our efforts on it.

The palette is shown below - the corresponding Kona names are shown on last month's blog post, but you don't have to use Kona or solids at all! Feel free to pull from your stash.

This quilt will be a modern sampler - make any modern quilt block you like! All blocks shall match the palette selected above and the finished size shall be a multiple of two inches (i.e., unfinished sizes such as 2.5"x10.5", 6.5"x6.5, 8.5"x10.5", etc) up to about 12".

Please bring your completed blocks to the October meeting so we can begin piecing the quilt. If you cannot make it to the October meeting, please arrange to send your blocks to the meeting with another member. If you haven't had a chance to make your blocks by the October meeting, feel free to work on them first thing at the meeting as we begin arranging the finished blocks. Please bring any leftover fabric matching the palette so that we can fill in the blanks between blocks.

We plan to piece the quilt top at the October meeting and hope to have it quilted by the November meeting, at which time we will bind the quilt and prepare to present it to the Pittsburgh Project!

Quilt Con Charity Quilt Challenge

The MQG has issued a challenge for guilds to complete a quilt for a charity of their choice (discussed in last month's post). As this quilt must be completed by January 3, 2015, we realize that it may be ambitious to complete two charity quilts during the busy fall months and holiday season. The guild has been registered to make one quilt that will be displayed at Quilt Con this spring and then returned to us for donation to a charity of our choice.

At the October meeting, we decided to make a modern star quilt using the Quilt Con Challenge palette shown here. The background fabric should be the white/gray (light colors) and the stars should be made with the bolder colors. Stars should be finished sizes in multiples of two inches (like the Pittsburgh Project quilt).

This quilt may require a little more time outside of the regular meetings for assembly as we are quickly running out of meeting time before the deadline. Please consider helping out with this quilt, but we do understand that it may be difficult for everyone to participate due to the time crunch.

October Meeting Supplies

Please bring your sewing machine, leftover fabrics matching the color palette(s), and any ancillary sewing supplies you might need to help us piece to top or create additional blocks (iron, rotary cutter and mat, rulers, scissors, etc). If you have an extension cord, please bring it, too as outlet space is at a premium.

As you finish up your blocks, don't forget to post them to our Flickr group!
