March 2016 Meeting Recap

The March meeting took place during the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Festival at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.  New member Barb Grossman (also the founder of the festival) invited us to take part in a creative block challenge Creativebug sponsored.  We decided to trek "dahntahn" to have a look.

 Barb had graciously set aside a room for us to have the business portion of our meeting.  Depending on how you registered, you might have received a goodies bag. (I saw that yarn, Melissa!  Loved it!)  If not, Barb also generously found some extra Spoonflower (!) fabric for us and a bolt of Coats fabric.  

Amanda, Nicole and Akemi covered their experience at QuiltCon and had a few tips:

• Closely read the description of the workshop you are registering for.  Assess your skill level so that you really get your time and money out of what you are choosing.    
• If your heart is set on a certain teacher or workshop, complete your registration after adding that one to your basket online.  Then go back and add the other activities you might want.
• Some workshops they took: Paperless Piecing With Elmer's Glue, Using Art As Inspiration, FMQ With Home Machines...
• It's a good idea to make sure you have your workshops covered, but don't forget to leave room in your schedule for impromptu lectures or to even take a day away and enjoy the host city.
• Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes. (Okay, they didn't say that, but it never hurts.)
• Check back at the turn of the year, workshops may have had cancellations, or opened up additional spots based on popularity.
• Don't forget to have fun. 

The next Sew-In Day was discussed.  It will be at last year's location (St. John's) on May 7th, from 9am-9pm.  We are looking for people to help set up and break down.  An E-vite will be going out as well as the poll that gives you a chance to volunteer for helping.  It is free for members, and it is BYOF(ood).  They have an extensive kitchen, but figure on easy to heat or cold items.

There will be a June FQC.  More details to follow.  Anyone want to choose the fabric?

The Board of Fiber Arts Council (the group responsible for Knit The Bridge) invited anyone interested to take part in a voting initiative.  More information can be found at Pole-2-Polls.

One of our new members, Barb Cain, will be leading Color Theory at the next meeting.  Barb is a published author (!) and will be assisting in getting us started in the Paint Chip Challenge!
