First Responder Recognition Quilt

In response to the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting, Pittsburgh area quilt guilds and quilters are making quilts to honor the quick-thinking and brave actions of the first responders. A call was put out for 6.5" string-pieced blocks and each group's quilt will maintain a heart design for continuity.

The Pittsburgh Modern Quilt Guild has committed to making one of these quilts and has chosen a combination of blues, greens and yellows with a single white (or low volume) center strip. Members are asked to supply their own fabric and muslin or paper backing. This is a stash busting project and an opportunity to use up scraps. String blocks are made from strips sewn on a muslin or paper square. Strips can be 1 to 3 inches in width, refer to the tutorial for complete instruction. If you don't have these colors in your stash, strips will be available at the January meeting. If you have fabric to share bring it.

Each quilt is to be 100 blocks and the photos here are just for reference. You can use whatever piecing method is most comfortable for you. The tutorial mentions muslin foundation piecing and foundation paper piecing.

Blocks can be turned in at the January and February meetings to Karen Womack, Cheralee Stover, or Laurie Mizrahi. You are welcome to make several blocks, or just one! They are a quick project. Any leftover blocks will be shared with the other makers' quilts to make it to our collective goal.

*Plans for quilts for the synagogue and/or congregations are ongoing.*
