October Meeting Recap

We gathered on October 7th for our monthly meeting.

- QuiltCon quilt submissions are open till November 30th 2018.There are 2 challenge categories as well: American Patchwork and Quilting Two-Color quilt challenge and Michael Miller fabric challenge

- We encourage everyone to think about running for a leadership position in January. All positions are open: President, VP of Programming, Treasurer, VP Membership, and Social Media Coordinator. Details in our bylaws or talk to the current officers!

- We have a nametag challenge running through November, when there will be a prize drawing!

- On the new MQG site, members must sign in and update personal profile to be active. You also now print your own Membership Card

- B collected the QuiltCon Charity Quilt blocks. The charity quilt assembly day is set for our December 1st Sew Day.

- QuiltCon quilt submissions and registrations are open till November 30th 2018. There are 2 challenge categories as well: American Patchwork and Quilting Two-Color quilt challenge and Michael Miller fabric challenge.

- On IG use the guild hashtag #pghmqg so we can feature you on the guild's page. The Modern Quilt Guild uses #showusyourmqg hashtag to pick members for feature on their page and newsletters. As a member you get access to free webinars, patterns and you can connect with other modern quilters.

- Our Minimalism Quilt Challenge winner is Kathie K! Congratulations! You will receive a $25 gift card. Thanks to everyone who participated and made such great quilts! 

- During our meeting Karen Womack taught us slow stitching. What is Slow Stitching? An effort by fiber artists to slow down, enjoy the process and create satisfying art. Karen talked about different stitching techniques such as: big stitch quilting, Japanese boro and sashiko. We practiced running stitches and worked on a small boro style square.

October Meeting

Join us Sunday, October 7th from 1-4pm for Slow Stitching! Slow Stitching is hand stitching. Karen Womack will discuss the slow stitch movement and why it's gaining popularity, the different types of hand stitching, and lead a demonstration on big stitch quilting.


Meeting attendees will practice big stitch quilting on a small square. Bring: small scissors to cut thread, pins or clips, and a white or light marking pencil. An orphan quilt block is optional. Fabric squares, threads, and needles will be provided.

If you made a big stitch quilt or have one in progress, please bring it.

You can win a prize if you finished your Minimalism Challenge Quilt!

September Meeting Recap

On September 23rd we met at the Holy Spirit in Millvale for our monthly meeting. We had a pretty good turnout for the rescheduled meeting.

Michele talked about

• the Toronto Modern Quilt Guild  invited our members to a workshop by Andrea Tsang-Jackson from 3rd Story Workshop in Toronto on October 3rd
• some members signed up for the Michael Miller fabric challenge, they received their bundles to work with

We have a few ongoing challenges

• Modern Minimalist Quilt challenge - due by the October meeting
• nametag challenge - due by the November meeting
• UFO 2018 finish along

Upcoming Programs  

• Improv Piecing workshop with Amanda  (@sewsewlife) on October 13th, 10-4 at Holy Spirit in Millvale. Lunch will be provided. Cost for members : $30, non members: $35
• Judi Robinson workshop in 2019. Date TBD
• continue to send us meeting topic ideas and workshop ideas

We briefly talked about the new Modern Quilt Guild website. You have to re-register to use the site and take advantage of the webinars, free patterns, and to be part of different quilting interest groups.

Also the Modern Quilt Guild is organizing a mini quilt swap for its members around the world if you are interested sign-ups are open in October.

QuiltCon quilt show submissions are open till November 30th 2018.

We had a technique workshop during our meeting. Members learned how to:

• inset circles by Amanda
• sew y-seams / partial seams by Michele
• make / use bias tape by Sandy
• sew zippers by Zsofia

Minimalism Quilt Challenge

If you complete a minimalist quilt for the September OR October meeting, you'll be entered in a drawing to win a Firecracker Fabrics gift card!

September Meeting Cancelled!

I really hate to announce that we are going to cancel the meeting on Sunday, September 9th. There is a Flood Watch in effect from 8pm this evening through Monday evening. In particular, tomorrow afternoon it's predicted that we're going to get heavy rain.

While I hope it remains a Flood Watch - and no floods actually happen! - not only has Millvale flooded in the past, but a lot of Pittsburgh roads are low-lying and get easily covered in water and become unsafe.

We'll work on rescheduling the meeting and be back in touch!

August Meeting Recap

On August 5th we met at our new location in Millvale. We had a great turn out, and welcomed several new members.

Michele talked about :

    -upcoming quilt shows with modern quilt categories:

• PNQE / quilt entry deadline is August 13th
• Beaver Valley Quilt Show / quilt entry deadline is Sept 22nd 

   -ongoing challenges

• nametag challenge / due by November meeting
• minimalist quilt challenge  / due by September 9th
• UFO 2018 finish along 

Nikki sent out a survey for the Jodi Robinson workshop to members. She needs your answers back so we can plan the workshop for next Spring. 

Zsofia did a small piecing and paper foundation piecing presentation. She talked about fabric choices, color inspiration, her favorite tools, thread and needles. She shared her process of working with small pieces and gave useful tips on how to set up your sewing space and machine for small piecing.

B. distributed the QuiltCon charity quilt blocks to members and talked about the pattern she designed for the challenge. She gave a short presentation on block assembly and fabric cutting. Can't wait to see the blocks they need to be returned by the October meeting!

Our members were busy sewing and quilting. Show and Tell was full of fun and colorful quilts.

Our next meeting is on Sunday, September 9th at the Millvale location. We hope to see you there!
